Chart 36-Reinhold Ebertin

February 16, 1901 / 4:45 a.m. Standard Time/ 1 hour East Gorlitz, Germany / Koch houses

Looking at the bowl first, Ebertin defined Mercury at the midpoint between Uranus and Pluto as "an intense thought-activity, a restless mind, an indefatigable mental worker, creative activity, an inventive and resourceful person."3 This certainly describes the breadth and depth of Ebertin's astrological work. A dearth of available biographical information led me to consider some of his writings to see if they fit the Bucket definition.

Cosmobiology, the school of astrology that Ebertin founded, is built on the foundation of the conjunction, square, and opposition aspects. Other aspects are, if not ignored, then relegated to a distant second place. The entire concept of the 90° dial focuses on the importance of these three aspects. Midpoint structure patterns, while not always involving square aspects, sustain the focus on planets equidistant from a third planet, and many of the charts and forms used in cosmobiology reflect the 90° relationships in the way they are drawn. Ebertin knew that the conjunction, square, and opposition indicate where the action is to be found in the natal chart, progressions, and transits. Going back to remarks earlier in this chapter, it is the very nature of the Bucket personality to focus on where the action is.

In his birth chart, Ebertin has Mars as the handle of the Bucket pattern. Mars is at the midpoint of the Sun and Mercury (d'=(D/Y). Even though it is not at the midpoint of the rim planets of the bowl, Mars still participates in an intensely dynamic configuration with the Sun and Mercury. Of the C=0/Y midpoint configuration, Ebertin says it indicates "practical thinking, a clear mind, [and] consciousness of [an] objective,"4 among other things. Whether we consider his own system of midpoints or explore the chart pattern as a whole, Ebertin definitely fills the bill of the Bucket personality.
